This course will uncover how strategies and frameworks from the Social Thinking® Methodology can support both social learning and academic competencies. Explore how the ILAUGHS Model of Social Cognition (i.e. social thinking) can help us connect the foundations between social learning and academic standards. Discover how learning differences, difficulties, or disabilities in social communication and executive functioning impact written expression, reading comprehension of literature, organizational skills, and working in a group. Learn practical strategies to support perspective taking, reading comprehension, social thinking, and organization. Rounding out the day: learn tips for student-driven goal writing and data keeping.

The day is organized through the lens of the ILAUGHS Model of Social Cognition (or social thinking). ILAUGHS is an acronym for Initiating Communication, Learning and Listening with Eyes and Brain, Abstract and Inferential Thinking, Understanding Perspective, Getting the Big Picture, Humor & Human Relatedness, and Sensory Impact or Influence. The ILAUGHS Model demonstrates how social interpretation and problem solving is linked to academic tasks, such as written expression, conversational language, reading comprehension, and organizational skills. We will then discuss how to take an individual’s self-determined social goals and embed them into rubrics or other visual measurement tools for more authentic outcome measures. The information in this course is applicable to all students as it pertains to social and academic learning. Note: This course is introductory and designed for those who are new to Social Thinking or just want to expand how they teach lessons from the Social Thinking Methodology.
