Perspective taking can happen anytime at school—during academic learning time, in the hallways, playground or lunchroom. In this free webinar you will learn about perspective taking in the classroom—supporting students to attend to and interpret their own and others’ thoughts and feelings, whether simply sharing space, interacting, or deciding if and how to participate. Active perspective taking allows us to empathize, sympathize, and compare ourselves to others to help us regulate our actions and reactions based on who’s with us and what’s happening in the social situation or context. It allows us to assume different points of view of people and groups in history, social studies, and language arts. It anchors how we explain ourselves verbally or in written expression. While many people learn perspective taking intuitively, others require explicit and concrete teaching and practical tools. The newest edition of our beloved story book: You Are A Social Detective, 2nd edition introduces perspective taking in the mainstream to children 4-10 years old, and now we have a detailed Tier 1 teaching curriculum to help bring these concepts to life in your classroom and school.
In this free 60-minute webinar, you will:
- Explore what perspective taking looks like within the classroom, why it’s important, and how to define it in clear, practical terms.
- Learn the connection between alexithymia (emotional processing) and perspective taking challenges and how that plays a role in the school day.
- Unpack social perspective taking, an abstract social cognitive concept, into 5 dynamic steps using a concrete visual framework to help social learners work toward meeting their own goals within the school world and the greater social world.
- Previously Recorded Q&A moderated by Dr. Pamela Crooke
