Self-Regulation and Hope for the Adults in the Room & New Ideas When Using The Zones of Regulation®

ages 4 - adult

Aspects of the very popular Social Thinking Methodology® can be applied quite broadly; we can even use them ourselves. The keynote by Michelle Garcia Winner, the founder of Social Thinking, will share with the audience tips for developing metacognitive awareness of our self-regulation strategies and how these can promote our own sense of hope. Leah Kuypers, the creator of the top selling and globally embraced curriculum, The Zones of Regulation® will then share what she has learned over the past 9 years about the best practices when using The Zones of Regulation with a range of individuals. Michelle’s keynote will be available for viewing as part of the ticket price for one month following the livestream event. Leah Kuypers’ keynote will only be available to view during the livestream conference on Friday, June 26, it will not be available as a recorded keynote post the livestream event.

Description

Keeping it real and keeping it fun!
Livestream events are special as they allow the livestream viewers to post questions the presenters(s) may answer live on the air or in writing. The presenters will also be modifying parts of their core content and strategies to address some of the issues we are all dealing with during this global pandemic. Humor, as always, will be embedded throughout the course and it is possible for us to have a special few minutes with some of the children in your home who may be coming in and watching parts of the livestream with you!

Self-Regulation and Hope for the Adults in the Room
Michelle Garcia Winner, SLP, MA-CCC and founder of the Social Thinking Methodology®

We encourage our students to improve their ability to self-regulate, but how do we, the adults, do it? Whether in a global crisis or having a challenging time at home, in the community, in the classroom, or clinic, we the parent, professional, coach, or store clerk need strategies when things get difficult. Who teaches us how to cope?

During this keynote we’ll explore strategies to regulate our emotions and stress during times when we feel it’s too hard to manage loved ones and relatives, including children, young or adult. Michelle’s keynote will be recorded and available for viewing as part of the ticket price for one month following the livestream event.

Zoning In: Considerations for Extending Practices Around The Zones of Regulation
Leah Kuypers, MA ED OTR/L, Occupational Therapist and Creator/Author of The Zones of Regulation
Note: This keynote is only available during the livestream event and will not be recorded.

Leah will build upon her widely adopted The Zones of Regulation framework, reflecting on “best practices” and lessons learned over the years to highlight considerations in implementing The Zones of Regulation with various target populations and address common questions and misconceptions. This extends to utilizing The Zones of Regulation in tandem with related social emotional learning concepts/curricula, and within multi-tiered support systems. Leah will outline a concrete pathway approach to strengthen regulation skills through use of The Zones framework, highlighting how implementation with fidelity paves the foundation for this pathway. This includes reflecting on the situation we’re in, awareness of how we’re feeling, and using our tools and strategies to regulate our feelings and behaviors. Strategies will be shared that make regulation and emotional-management less abstract and simpler for all to navigate, including the co-regulators supporting individuals through the challenges. Leah Kuypers’ keynote will only be available to view during the livestream conference on Friday, June 26, it will not be available as a recorded keynote post the livestream event.

Raising an Organized Child: Strategies to Promote Executive Functions

ages 4 - adult

Two incredible livestream presenters, Dr. Damon Korb, MD FAAP and Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician, and Michelle Garcia Winner, SLP, MA-CCC and founder of the Social Thinking Methodology®, will connect the dots between executive functions—including self-regulation and perspective taking—and creative, practical strategies to foster organized thinking. Damon’s keynote will explain five important steps parents can take to raise an organized child, and he’ll present strategies to foster children’s active engagement of organized thinking, the kind of learning and functions they’ll use throughout their lives. Michelle’s keynote will focus on friendships. How do we make them? How do we keep them? What creative strategies can we teach to help tweens and teens learn to invest in these important but complicated relationships? A Q&A session with both speakers will follow this presentation.

Friendships: How Do We Make Them? How Do We Keep Them?
What Are the Roles of Executive Functions, Self-Regulation, and Perspective Taking?

Michelle Garcia Winner, SLP, MA-CCC and founder of the Social Thinking Methodology®

Making friends, keeping friends, building relationships. It looks so easy, but the social brain is hard at work. With this keynote, we will explore the juggling act within the social brain as it relies on select executive functions, knowledge about the social world, active perspective taking, social self-awareness, self-regulation of our emotions, and how people read our intentions to help us meet our goal of having others want to be part of our lives and our being part of their lives. Michelle, the founder of the Social Thinking Methodology, will explain how she is bringing these concepts to life for a very bright, but lonely 13-year-old by using a variety of unusual props. Michelle’s keynote will be recorded and available for viewing as part of the ticket price for one month following the livestream event.

Raising an Organized Child
Damon Korb, MD FAAP

Organized children aren’t born, they’re raised. That is the philosophy of Dr. Korb’s presentation which covers the development of executive functions from infancy through the teen years. Organized thinking is not just about finding two socks that match. It covers the neurocognitive processes and executive functions needed to show insight, take perspective, and solve problems. The first part of this presentation explains the five important steps parents can take to Raise an Organized Child. The second half of the presentation focuses on strategies to build the higher cognitive functions, including problem solving and forward thinking (e.g., planning, anticipating, and estimating). Damon’s keynote will be recorded and available for viewing as part of the ticket price for one month following the livestream event.

Creative Strategies for Teaching Social Thinking at Home and Through Tele-Education

ages 4 - adult

From its inception, aspects of the Social Thinking Methodology® were designed to travel between time, space, and people with explicit language-based frameworks and vocabulary as the vehicle that transports us. Many of the materials developed by Think Social Publishing use the school environment as the backdrop for teaching these concepts and strategies for deeper social emotional learning. During this keynote, a series of presenters from our Social Thinking -Training and Speaker’s Collaborative, including Michelle Garcia Winner and Dr. Pamela Crooke, will present different ideas about how to use and teach core concepts and strategies to use face to face in the home and through digital screens.

Description

Topics to be covered during this series of keynotes include but are not limited to:

  • Brainstorming About Our Social Minds from Inside Out and Outside In!
Through the use of visual supports (special props and pipe cleaners), Michelle Garcia Winner will demonstrate a variety of interesting ways to explore and discuss how and why we need to take the time to loop through other people’s minds to figure out the social response that is required—now!

  • Perspective Taking Projects for Parents and Practitioners
Walk away with five practical activities using readily available materials to teach perspective taking and problem solving around the dinner table, in the car, during teaching time, in virtual groups, and with siblings. Using recycled materials and everyday supplies, we will explore contraptions, inventions, and projects that are engaging but also designed to teach on a deeper level.

  • What’s There to Learn in Writing and Publishing a Family Newspaper?
Incorporate all types of executive functions, narrative language, written language, use of memes, and advanced perspective taking to figure out what makes real news real and fake news fun but fake. Teach and learn how and when to use humor at the right time, with the right people, and in the right place—all with the purpose of avoiding readers’ confusion!

  • …and more

All keynotes today will be recorded and available for viewing as part of the ticket price for one month following the livestream event.
