Who should attend

Social executive functioning is at the heart of successful play, social interaction, and learning as part of a group. In this course, we teach how to move from the five basic Social Thinking lessons in We Thinkers! Volume 1: Social Explorers (formerly The Incredible Flexible You!) to the more complex lessons presented in We Thinkers! Volume 2. Attendees will learn strategies to apply in the classroom, online learning environment, clinic, or home the very next day!


In Part 1: Assessing and Planning Interactive Play for Different Levels of Social Learners, we share key information and an innovative tool for helping early learners with average to strong language and learning abilities develop critical social competencies. Attendees will:


  • Explore concepts such as the role of play and working as part of a group in the development of self-regulation, social problem solving, and executive functioning.
  • Examine why a student, client, or patient who has difficulty with social attention will have trouble with sharing an imagination and interacting/playing with peers.
  • Learn to use Social Thinking’s innovative tool, the Group Collaboration, Play and Problem Solving (GPS) Scale, to understand the five different levels of play and how they relate to classroom participation and academic standards whether learning online or in person.
  • Understand how this scale interfaces with and expands upon other known scales such as the Westby Play Scale (2000), a highly regarded standard in the literature of play assessment.
  • Learn how to use We Thinkers! Volume 2 and related treatment ideas with fidelity.
  • Understand that this course builds on the five core Social Thinking concepts presented in our precursory series, Teaching Social Thinking to Early Learners through Stories and Play-Based Activities.

*Treatment refers to using conceptual and strategy-based frameworks to help individuals improve their social competencies.


In Part 2: Using the Social Thinking Vocabulary to Support Academics, Play, and Relationships we explore the Social Thinking Vocabulary concepts of expected and unexpected behavior and hidden rules, smart guesses, flexible and stuck thinking, the size of the problem, and shared imagination as part of supporting our early social learners in developing stronger play, academics, and relationships.

Throughout this series, we explore how we can support our early social learners in their interactive play and how we can use play to learn about the social world. You will learn not just the “why” behind the concepts we teach but the “how” with practical strategies and examples that you can start infusing into the things you already do and say.


Series Content Disclosure: While this course includes information about other products and the work of other authors, it focuses primarily on the content included in the We Thinkers! Volume 2: Social Problem Solvers curriculum, storybooks, and the GPS assessment and treatment* guide for the purpose of teaching this information with fidelity.

  1. Describe two aspects of each of the five levels of play as explained through Social Thinking’s Group Collaboration, Play and Problem Solving (GPS) Scale.
  2. Define two different strategies to provide differentiated instruction to students who have different interactive play abilities.
  3. Design a lesson to promote a social learner’s development of shared, collaborative, imaginative play (SCIP).

You will receive a separate email for each course day you registered to attend. An online form will be available to SLPs at that time to submit their ASHA info to claim ASHA CEUs.

Following the expiration of the recording, we will send an email with a questionnaire. If you watched the recorded content, please fill out the questionnaire and survey. We will then send the follow-up email with the Certificate of Attendance. An online form will be available to SLPs at that time to submit their ASHA info to claim ASHA CEUs.


Remember, mental health professionals can only receive CE credit if they watched the live version of the courses (approval is pending). The recorded copy is not eligible for mental health CE credit.
