What is the National Social Thinking Providers Conference?

Since 2000, parents and professionals alike have embraced Social Thinking concepts in the U.S. and internationally. As she has spoken to groups, Michelle Garcia Winner, who started this treatment approach, has met inspired professionals who made Social Thinking concepts and models “doable” in their own school programs and clinics. To capture this energy and expertise, three years ago Michelle started the Social Thinking Providers Conference where these professionals share their ideas on implementing Social Thinking effectively. The conference received great reviews! STPC expands upon a general or specific knowledge base of Social Thinking philosophy and concepts - it is not a “Social Thinking 101” conference. For this reason, the two STPC weekend days are not intended for people to learn basic information. However, the Preconference Day (June 25) is designed as a focused workshop that will serve to deepen all levels of Social Thinking knowledge!

Social Thinking Tools for the Classroom and into Adulthood!

The Social Academic Connection: Story Grammar Marker® and the use of STORYBRAID™ to teach critical thinking for story telling, reading comprehension and written expression

These evidence-based treatment strategies are created and presented by Maryellen Rooney Moreau, M.Ed., CCC-SLP. This program dovetails beautifully with teaching core concepts related to the ILAUGH model of Social Thinking. 3.5 hour presentation.

Learning Outcomes/Participants will be able to:

• Learn how the Story Grammar Marker® and Braidy the StoryBraid™ help children develop the skills necessary for success in school, on high stakes tests and in life.
• List and define the components and Stages of Development of a Narrative Episode (story macrostructure).
• Generate “Wh” questions for use in Read Alouds & Think Alouds to scaffold storytelling and listening comprehension.
• Identify and connect the narrative components that refer to critical thinking: kick offs, feelings and plans.
• Assist children in expanding use of cohesive ties for the formulation of sentences within the episode.
• Recognize “story sparkle” (story microstructure).
• Analyze children’s literature for narrative structure.

Presenter: Michelle Garcia Winner, M.A., CCC-SLP, founder of Social Thinking. Michelle presents the latest strategies to facilitate Social Thinking and related social skills for our adults. 2.5 hour presentation.

Learning Outcomes/Participants will be able to:

• Describe social emotional  expectations of the adult neurotypical community
• Describe social paradigms (social psychology of adults) through which we interpret and respond to communicative interactions.
• Name and describe 3 treatment strategies to help clarify and respond to expectations of the adult work world.
• Describe the 2 challenges our adults face in a world surrounded by NT’s and how this information helps us to guide our treatments for children and adolescents.
