Content Disclosure: This course is designed to demonstrate how to teach the scope and sequence of the new Social Detective and Superflex® series with fidelity. The content will primarily focus on core products from the Social Thinking Methodology related to these curricula. Our intention is not to exclusively market these materials but rather help attendees understand how to teach the concepts with fidelity.

Fasten your capes and prepare to soar to new heights at this practical and fun conference day! Our expert team at Social Thinking has meticulously crafted an updated curriculum series that will equip you with the creative tools to support social observation, self-regulation, conflict resolution, and working and learning in groups. Explore the Social Detective and Superflex curricula and engage your students in a fun-filled learning experience where they become Superflex superheroes or superkids, managing UnthinkaBots™ to improve their social observation, social self-awareness, and self-regulation. Discover the interactive scope and sequence found in our award-winning resources and gain invaluable insights on teaching these concepts to elementary school students ages 7-12+. Learn how to embed social learning concepts, strategies, and activities into your school day and existing lessons to cultivate the social, emotional, and academic learning of your students and support them toward meeting their social and academic goals.

There are any number of situations across a day that can be dysregulating for students and adults alike. These might be the rush of getting ready in the morning, worry about an upcoming deadline, or an unanticipated change in plans. To give students and clients tools to be more aware of these situations and subsequently develop strategies to prepare for and navigate them, we have created a fun and motivating scope and sequence of teaching through two complementary curricula (Social Detective and Superflex). Kids love imagining themselves as Superflex superheroes who learn to take on and manage imaginary characters called UnthinkaBots™, which represent ways of thinking and acting that can present obstacles to meeting their goals. Attendees will learn how to engage students in lesson quests that help develop learning about themselves as part of the social world.

We will explore creative ideas for use in the classroom, small groups, or individually to support social observation, self-regulation, conflict resolution, and working as part of a group. We will also discuss the connections between the Social Thinking® Methodology and academic demands through the lens of social, emotional, and academic learning (SEAL) for students ages 7-12+. This day focuses on building Social Detective thinking, expanding superflexible thinking, managing UnthinkaBots™ (formally Unthinkables), and building up Thinkable® powers as a backdrop for teaching.

Immerse yourself in our new You Are a Social Detective! Teaching Curriculum & Support Guide and updated Superflex Curriculum and harness the powers of UnthinkaBots™ and Thinkable® Duos to engage your students in a dynamic and enriching learning experience. Walk away with a comprehensive understanding of the dos and don'ts for teaching these concepts effectively and with fidelity.

Over the course of the day, we’ll explore:

  • The difference between social self-awareness and social self-regulation

  • How to teach students about their brains’ strengths and needs

  • Developing Social Detective thinking to figure out the plan of the group and the hidden rules and group goals

  • Exploring the interactive scope and sequence found in You Are a Social Detective! and the updated Superflex Curriculum

  • The powers of UnthinkaBot™ and Thinkable® Duos

  • How to extend the same concepts through a new lens for older and younger students

  • The dos and don'ts for teaching the concepts and materials

Organization Meets Self-Regulation: Helping Students Help Themselves with Practical and Engaging Tools

upper elementary - high school

On this day we’ll unpack topics that we assume students intuitively know related to executive functioning, such as organizational skills, social problem solving, and self-regulation across contexts. Some of the many related topics we will also explore include, but are not limited to, the power of metacognition, positive and negative feelings and emotions, the importance of mental time travel, use of the Like-Dislike Scale and the Risk Scale, rallying our motivation, along with the use of templates for students of different ages to target social problem solving. We will also bring all these concepts to life with selected artwork from two new products that will be available by the end of 2024.

Description

Many students intuitively learn strategies to foster executive functioning, without significant direct instruction, such as organizational skills, social problem solving, time management, and self-regulation of their actions and feelings based on the situation and the people. But there is a significant number of students who do not and it’s up to us, as educators, caregivers, and therapists to provide supports and teaching. In this day, we will unpack a range of concepts and provide a variety of related strategies for different age groups. These include, but are not limited to, the power of metacognition, exploring positive and negative feelings and emotions, rallying motivation, use of the Like-Dislike Scale as well as The Risk Scale, and a deeper look at how our mind travels across time (past and future) to guide what we do in the here and now. Throughout the talk, we’ll also bring these and other concepts to life with the help of selected artwork within two new teaching tools with embedded stories to be published in 2024. One is a graphic novel for tweens, teens, and young adults called Brain Hacks: Strategies to Build Motivation and Inspire (Sojat &Winner), for students from about 10 years old through young adulthood. This graphic teaching guide will introduce the Like-Dislike Scale as well as the Time Travel Wall to encourage youth to consider a range of strategies they can learn to use to help them help themselves. The other visual teaching guide is called Let’s Solve it! (Welday & Winner). This colorful visual tool is designed to unpack and engage younger children (ages 4–8) through 23 problem-solution story sets and related thinksheets to help kids work through a four-step process when solving socially based problems and recognizing their solutions.
