Based on the success of the previous book, The Behavior Code: A Practical Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Most Challenging Students, this companion guide delves more deeply into helping classroom teachers, special educators, and others create and implement positive, successful behavior intervention plans (“FAIR Plans”) for students with anxiety-related or oppositional behaviors in grades K-6.
Author Jessica Minahan takes readers step-by-step through the process of understanding and practicing the components of a FAIR behavior intervention plan so they or a team can immediately customize it and put it to work in classrooms. Additional tips on creating interventions, as well as checklists to help with implementation and monitoring progress, are also included.
Packed with brainstorming and reflection exercises, planning activities, templates, case studies, recommended apps, and other technology resources, The Behavior Code Companion will help educators create optimal classroom environments for all students.
Michelle's thoughts on The Behavior Code Companion
I am a big fan of Ross Greene's Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) which is one of the many sources of inspiration for this excellent set of books. This focus of the FAIR Behavior Intervention Plan is to help teams identify a student's lagging skills and embed treatments to help students learn to be more resilient and responsive to adapting in situations that the student has previously found difficult. In this companion volume, the many worksheets, practice example, and clear discussions about problematic types of behavior and case studies help the parent or professional better understand the function of behavior, while also identifying clear ways we can all help individuals to feel valued and able to learn in the most challenging of situations. Like any good educational book, the reader will learn clear concrete ideas that can be used for all types of students, even those who many not exhibit any challenging behaviors.
