Social Thinking Across The Home and School Day: The ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition
Designed for parents and professionals to understand the inner minds of persons with social-learning weaknesses, this workshop presents not only functional treatment strategies for use both at school and at home, but also models for understanding why these students react and respond the way they do.
We will introduce the concept of teaching Social Thinking and related social skills. Participants will explore teaching social concepts in a manner that is sensitive to the context/situation while considering what other people are thinking and how one is expected to respond. We will demystify why we need to teach more than "social skills" to our students with near normal to way above normal verbal intelligence. We will explore the ILAUGH model of Social Thinking that demonstrates how social-processing difficulties limit not only expected social skills, but also the ability to work as part of a group and to focus on specific academic tasks, such as written expression, reading comprehension and organizational skills. Strategies for classroom management, such as teaching students about blurting and ways to cope with the "boring moment," are among the popular lessons. We will also address how best to approach writing IEP goals that lead to real, albeit, slow change in how students understand and respond to the world around them. Participants have praised this workshop for its depth in explaining why students with social skills difficulties have related academic challenges that affect them across their school and home days.
Course Objectives/Participants will be able to:
• Define the acronym ILAUGH to explain aspects of social cognition.
• Explain why a person with social skill deficits has academic problems related to reading comprehension and written expression.
• Identify at least one strategy for each concept reviewed in the ILAUGH Model.
• Distinguish and describe the difference between a useful IEP goal and one that is of little benefit towards developing realistic treatment.
• Explain why it is critical to define the situation/context as you teach Social Thinking and the expected related social skills.

Thinking About YOU Thinking About MEPerspective taking involves the synergy among the researched concepts of Theory of Mind, gestalt processing and executive functioning. This workshop will explore how central the skill of perspective-taking is to all social contact and interpretation be it non-verbal or verbal, intentional or non-intentional.
From years of clinical work developing more effective treatments to help students develop their own Social Thinking and related social skills, Michelle created the Spectrum of Perspective-Taking. This spectrum objectively defines three levels of social learners and how their social-cognitive differences need different treatments so that each student can learn in a manner that best matches how his or her brain understands social information. We must move away from the notion that all persons with social skills learning challenges need the same type of treatments! We also need to understand how different levels of the social mind can hinder or facilitate processing and responding to curricular demands and acquiring life skills. We will further explore how the Spectrum of Perspective-Taking does not align with autism spectrum disorders; thus, the treatment design is not based on a student's label but instead on his or her social-functioning level!
Basic concepts related to treatment, such as the Four Steps of Communication and the Four Steps of Perspective-Taking, will be reviewed along with practical treatment strategies and demonstrations of how movies and TV shows can be used to teach Social Thinking.
Course Objectives/Participants will be able to:
• Define what perspective-taking means.
• Define three different levels of perspective-taking deficits.
• Define the term "thinking with your eyes" and apply its use in educational situations.
• State the four different steps towards working on developing social communication skills.
• Describe a set of activities that can be done to work on each of the four steps of treatment.
Intended audiences: teachers; speech-language pathologists; therapists (MFTs; LCSWs; OTs; PTs); autism specialists; clinical, educational, developmental psychologists; clinical and educational administrators; physicians; nurses; nurse practitioners; social workers; paraprofessionals; parents and other family members and caregivers of students with social thinking challenges.
Populations to be discussed: School-age students and adults who have social and communication difficulties, including but not limited to those related to high-functioning autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger Syndrome, NLD, ADHD and undiagnosed challenges. Information presented concentrates on students with near normal to far above normal verbal intelligence (verbal IQs above 70). Most strategies focus on school-age children and adults, although the information is helpful for those living and working with younger children.
