Presentation: pdf_button

Ellyn Arwood, Ed.D., Carole Kaulitz, M.Ed. and Mabel Brown
Behavior is a series of actions that others interpret and decide what meaning to assign which in turn helps an individual learn “how to behave”. The purpose of this workshop is to describe the relationship between thinking or conceptualizing and learning to behave. Please go to the Conference Session Selection menu if you'd like to attend. We will show how we use language to assign pro-social meaning to behavior and how this assignment of meaning helps change a person’s perspective. We will showcase examples of how to provide mental pictures for our students and to help them visually see themselves in perspective taking and how language changes behavior based on values of the dominant culture. We will walk participants through different ways to perceive behavior, how to decide what is acceptable behavior, and how to use specific methods to help individuals learn to socially behave.

One of three 90-minute sessions to choose from at this time slot.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to explain the anti-social thinking to pro-Social Thinking continuum of development.

2. Participants will be able to describe the relationship between thinking or conceptualizing and learning to behave.

3. Participants will be able to identify anti-social behavior and then assign language to set pro-social limits and boundaries.
