Poster Session: Leah Kuypers, OT and autism specialist; Elizabeth Sautter, M.A., CCC-SLP; Liz Lang, M.A., CCC-SLP
The Zones of Regulation™ is a curriculum that was developed to foster skills in self-regulation and is being published by Think Social Publishing this fall. The curriculum was created by Leah Kuypers, an occupational therapist and autism specialist. The Zones concept and learning activities help children and adults manage their emotions and sensory needs while also addressing executive functioning skills and social thinking concepts.
Self-regulation and social thinking are interdependent on each other and it is difficult to perform one of these skills when the other is impaired. Based on the experience of a multi-disciplinary team, this presentation is intended to teach professionals how they can incorporate The Zones curriculum into their Social Thinking practice in order to enhance the services they provide. Ideas and video will be shared to demonstrate using The Zones with Social Thinking in a social learning group, individual therapy and infusion into the school and home.
Learning Objectives
1. Increase audience knowledge of how Social thinking and Self-regulation are interdependent
2. Increase audience comfort in implementing a self-regulation curriculum as part of their practice
3. Increase audience awareness of importance in working collaboratively with other professionals and parents in order to generalize skills across environments
