Medications never make up for an inadequate program, but they might help a good enough program succeed. We will review the rationale for using medication within the context of a good program and review common medications, using a variety of case examples and leaving time for your questions. Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will learn concepts of evidence based medicine, FDA issues, informed consent, and family choice
  2. Participants will learn a process for considering the use of medication based on clinical judgment, available research, our level of understand of these disorders, and family values.
  3. Participants will learn about specific medications used in treating symptoms of developmental conditions, including the expected benefits, possible side effects, and a practical method for sorting through the many possible choices of medication

Presenter

Joshua D. Feder, MD, is a child and family psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of developmental and learning disorders. He is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, is on the faculty of the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders (ICDL), and was recently named a Distinguished Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association.
