Inside Out: What Makes the Person With Social Cognitive Deficits Tick?
Focuses on helping to explain the overall complexity of our student’s cognitive development. This book really helps to explain how a social skills problem is also an academic problem. While this is designed as a practical tool to help educators and parents begin to explore some of the techniques available to help, it is also a good tool for mainstream teachers. This book has received a good reputation for taking complex information and explaining it in a more simple way that is not intimidating for the reader.

Thinking About You Thinking About Me
This book helps to explore the concept of perspective taking in great detail. While Michelle continues to make the point that a social problem bleeds over into the world of academics, she really uses this book to introduce a therapeutic paradigm for helping folks how to organize their thinking when working with persons on the social interaction skills. This book is also very practical giving specific information on how to help students learn about their own disability as well as how behavior management is a social experience. The final chapter in this book is about the informal assessment process.

No, the two books are independent reads. However, if you are to read both I would start with the Inside Out book to get the overall outline of the difficulties with this group of folks, and then read the Thinking of You.. book to get many more strategies.

  •  Which book will help with my IEP development?
Both books. Each has IEP goal ideas and worksheets to help with educational lesson development.
